400m Hurdles Rules
One lap with 10 hurdles in the way — widely considered one of the toughest events on the programme.
Run in lanes for the full lap, clearing 10 hurdles evenly spaced along the way.
- •Fastest time over the distance wins
- •Times recorded to 0.01s
- •League standings can rank by personal best or head-to-head placings
- •Trailing a leg around a hurdle is a disqualifiable foul, same as the sprint hurdles
- •Runners must stay in their assigned lane for the full lap
- •Stride pattern between hurdles (how many steps) is a key part of pacing this event
Stride patterns around a lap
The 400m hurdles is a rhythm event: athletes choose a stride pattern between hurdles, commonly thirteen to fifteen strides, and hold it as long as fatigue allows. The moment that pattern breaks, times fall away sharply.
Because the barriers are spaced 35m apart around the whole lap, athletes must also be able to hurdle off both legs, or plan where they will change down. That is the technical work that separates the event from a flat 400m.
Bend hurdling and lane discipline
Five of the ten hurdles are on bends, which is what makes the event genuinely difficult. Hurdling on a curve pushes an athlete outward, so lane discipline matters, and stepping inside the line is a disqualification.
In a club league, allow athletes to race at a reduced height while learning. The full 0.914m for men and 0.762m for women is punishing for a novice on the third bend of a tiring lap.
Common questions
How many hurdles and how far apart?
Ten hurdles, with 45m to the first, 35m between each, and a 40m run-in to the finish. That spacing is identical for all categories; only the height changes.
What stride pattern should an athlete use?
Thirteen to fifteen strides between hurdles is typical for club athletes, with faster athletes using fewer. The key is consistency, and having a planned point at which to add strides as fatigue arrives.
How much recovery does the event need?
As much as a flat 400m, which is to say a great deal. Forty-five minutes before another hard effort is a sensible minimum, and hurdling on tired legs is where technique breakdowns cause injuries.
Can athletes hurdle off either leg?
The best ones can, which is what lets them maintain rhythm when fatigue changes their stride. Teaching both lead legs early is the highest-value technical work in the event.
