Discus Throw Rules
A spinning throw of a weighted disc from a marked circle, for maximum distance.
Each athlete gets a fixed number of attempts (usually 3-6) from a marked circle; the best valid throw counts.
- •Longest valid throw, measured from the circle to the nearest mark, wins
- •Distances measured to the nearest centimetre
- •League standings can rank by best distance across the season
- •The thrower must stay within the circle until the discus lands
- •Stepping outside the circle before the throw is measured is a foul
- •The discus must land within a marked sector for the throw to count
The turn and the release
Discus is thrown from a rotation of one and a half turns within a 2.5m circle, which is smaller than it looks once you are spinning in it. Balance through the turn matters more than raw arm strength, which surprises most newcomers.
The discus leaves the hand off the index finger with a clockwise spin for a right-handed thrower. That spin is what stabilises it in flight, and a wobbling discus loses distance dramatically regardless of how hard it was thrown.
Cage safety and wind
Discus must be thrown from inside a cage. This is not optional: a mishandled discus can leave the circle at close to a right angle to the intended direction, and cage specifications exist precisely because of that.
Discus is also the throw most affected by wind, and counter-intuitively a headwind usually increases distance by generating lift. A league recording conditions alongside distances gives athletes a much fairer picture of their season.
Common questions
What are the implement weights?
2kg for senior men and 1kg for senior women, with lighter weights for junior and masters categories. Check the specification for every category on your programme before the competition begins.
Why does a headwind help?
The discus is an aerofoil, so air moving over it generates lift. A moderate headwind, particularly one slightly across the throwing sector, typically produces longer throws than still conditions.
How does an athlete exit the circle legally?
Through the back half, after the discus has landed, without touching the top of the circle rim. Stepping out the front or touching outside the circle before landing is a foul.
Can discus be thrown without a cage?
No. A cage meeting the required specification is mandatory for competition and training alike, because the flight path of a mishandled throw can deviate sharply from the intended direction.
