How to Start a Golf League With Friends

Most casual leagues play a fixed tee time each week at the same course, or rotate between a small group of local courses across the season. Decide upfront on stroke play (total strokes across the round decides the winner) or match play (won hole-by-hole, the format used in the Ryder Cup); they produce genuinely different competitive dynamics.

A handicap system, where each player's score is adjusted based on their established skill level, is what makes golf leagues fair across a wide range of ability, and is worth setting up properly if your group spans beginners to low-handicap players.

A society of sixteen needs four consecutive tee times and a course willing to hold them. Weekday and winter slots are far easier to secure and considerably cheaper than weekend mornings, when member competitions dominate.

Rotating between two or three courses across a season keeps it interesting and spreads your booking risk. It also means a course that changes its society policy does not end your league.

Decide the format, the tees being played and any local rules before anyone tees off, and put them on the card. Preferred lies through the winter is the one that most often gets assumed rather than agreed.

Collect the cards at the end, check them against each other and post the result the same day. A society that publishes standings within hours of the round keeps its season alive; one that promises a table later usually never produces one.
