How to Start a Netball League With Friends

Seven players per side are on court at once, each restricted to specific named positions and areas of the court (Goal Shooter, Goal Attack, Wing Attack, Centre, Wing Defence, Goal Defence, Goal Keeper). A workable squad is 9-10 to allow rotation. New leagues often let players try different positions across the season rather than fixing everyone in one role from the start.

A netball court is similar in size to a basketball court and is divided into thirds, which restricts where each position can go. Most sports halls that host basketball can be marked out for netball with minimal extra setup.

A round-robin format, decided by standard league points, is the norm, the same structure as football or hockey. Log each match's final score; netball's fast pace and the shooters' accuracy tend to produce close, high-scoring games that make for genuinely tight league tables.

Netball needs surprisingly little: a couple of match balls, two full sets of positional bibs and court hire. Indoor sports hall courts in the UK typically cost £25 to £60 an hour; outdoor courts are often cheaper and are what many club leagues use through the summer.

Posts are the only substantial item, and almost every hall or outdoor court that markets itself for netball already has them. Check the ring height is the standard 3.05m, because a hall that shares posts with basketball sometimes does not.

Mixed netball is a growing format and changes recruitment completely, since it opens the sport to a group that has largely never been offered it. Some leagues require a minimum number of women on court at all times to keep the balance.

Walking netball is the other option worth knowing about: same rules, no running, and it brings in players who left the sport decades ago. Several clubs run both, using the same courts on the same night.

Seven positions plus subs means a squad of ten per team, and netball is one of the easier sports to recruit for because so many people played it at school.

Umpiring is the harder gap to fill. Governing bodies run short introductory courses at modest cost, and funding two volunteers through one is the single best investment a new netball league can make in its own quality.
