How to Start a Padel League With Friends

Padel courts are enclosed and glass-walled, smaller than a tennis court, and still relatively new to a lot of areas. Booking ahead matters more than it does for most sports here, since demand at popular local venues can be high, especially in the evenings.

Unlike tennis, padel is essentially always played as doubles (2 vs 2). There's no real singles format, so a league needs pairs rather than individuals, or a rotating-partner format if you want individual standings instead of fixed pairs.

Padel courts in the UK typically cost £30 to £50 an hour, split between four players, which works out cheaper per person than most indoor sports. Rackets can usually be hired at the venue for a small fee, which removes the barrier for anyone trying the sport.

Balls are the recurring cost and pressurised padel balls lose their bounce faster than tennis balls. Budget for a new tube every few sessions rather than expecting a set to last a season.

Padel has grown faster than court supply almost everywhere, and peak evening slots at popular venues are gone weeks in advance. A league needs a standing block booking rather than week-by-week reservations.

Off-peak slots are far easier to secure and much cheaper. A league that can meet at 2pm on a Sunday or early on a weekday evening has a real advantage over one insisting on the most contested hour of the week.

Padel is genuinely easy to start: the court is enclosed, the racket is short and rallies begin from the first session in a way they do not in tennis. That is the sport's biggest recruiting advantage and worth saying explicitly.

The one thing to teach early is the underarm serve, which must bounce before being hit and land in the diagonal box. Everything else can be learned mid-rally, but a league where half the players cannot start a point will not enjoy its first month.
