Handball League Tips: Running a Fair, Fun Season

A strong goalkeeper can single-handedly keep a weaker team competitive. If you're forming teams, treat goalkeeper ability as seriously as outfield scoring talent when balancing sides.

Handball's high-scoring nature means a bad mismatch can end 30-10 rather than a more painful-looking but comparable 3-1 in football. If margins like that become a pattern, it's worth reshuffling teams or splitting into divisions.

Because scores run high, goal difference is often the real decider between teams level on points. Make sure it's being logged accurately every week so the final table reflects genuine form, not just who happened to win the most matches narrowly.

Full handball wants a 40x20m court, which most sports halls do not have. Plenty of casual leagues run on a badminton-marked or five-a-side-sized hall instead, with five outfield players and a keeper rather than six and a keeper.

Shrink the goal area to match if you shrink the court, otherwise the six-metre line ends up halfway to the centre and the game becomes a shooting drill. Agree the markings before the first fixture and use the same hall all season if you can.

Handball's passive play rule exists to stop a leading team simply holding the ball, and casual leagues that ignore it discover why it exists somewhere around the second half of a tight game.

The simple version is a warning signal followed by a maximum of six passes to attempt a shot. Applied from week one it is uncontroversial; introduced in week eight because someone stalled a game, it feels like a rule invented against a specific team.

Two-minute suspensions are core to handball and need someone on the clock. In a self-officiated league that job goes to the team sitting out, along with the scoresheet.

Keep a season tally of suspensions alongside goals. It rarely changes the table, but it makes discipline visible, and a side that can see it has served twice as many suspensions as anyone else usually fixes the problem without being asked.

Handball uses different ball sizes for men's, women's and junior play, and a mixed casual league should settle on one and stick with it rather than letting each team bring their own.

Resin is the other one to settle early: many sports halls ban it outright because of the residue, and a league that assumed it was allowed can lose its venue over it. Ask the hall first, then tell the players.
