Handball Rules

Two teams throw and catch a ball, trying to score in the opponent's goal.

Format

7-a-side (6 outfield + goalkeeper) on a court roughly the size of a basketball court; two 30-minute halves.

Scoring
  • A goal is scored by throwing the ball into the net past the goalkeeper, worth 1 point
  • Games are high-scoring; a competitive match might finish 28-25
Key Rules
  • Players can take a maximum of 3 steps while holding the ball before passing, dribbling, or shooting
  • A 7-metre throw (handball's penalty) is awarded for fouls that stop a clear scoring chance
  • Only the goalkeeper may stand inside the goal area (the marked semicircle in front of the goal)

Adapting to the hall you have

Full handball wants a 40x20m court, which most sports halls do not have. Casual leagues commonly play on a five-a-side-sized hall with five outfield players and a keeper rather than six and a keeper.

If you shrink the court, shrink the goal area to match, otherwise the six-metre line ends up halfway to the centre and the game becomes a shooting drill. Check whether the hall permits resin too, as many ban it outright.

The rules newcomers break constantly

Three steps and three seconds is far more restrictive than the basketball instincts most players arrive with, and travelling is the single most common infringement in a new league. Twenty minutes on steps, dribble and the six-metre line at the first session pays for itself.

Passive play is the other rule worth applying from week one: a warning signal followed by a maximum of six passes to attempt a shot. Introduced late, because someone stalled a game, it feels like a rule invented against a specific team.

Common questions

How long is a handball match?

Two thirty-minute halves at full level. Casual leagues running several fixtures an evening typically shorten to two fifteen or twenty-minute halves, which still gives a proper game inside a shared hall booking.

What is a two-minute suspension?

A temporary exclusion for serious or repeated fouls, leaving the team a player short. It needs someone on the clock, which in a self-officiated league is the job of the team sitting out along with the scoresheet.

Can you play in the goal area?

No outfield player may touch the floor inside the six-metre area, though they may jump in and release the ball before landing. That single rule is what produces handball's characteristic leaping shots.

How many substitutes can a team use?

Substitutions are unlimited and made on the fly through a designated zone, without stopping play. That is why handball squads rotate constantly and why a team of ten gets far more court time each than the same squad would in football.
