How to Start a Handball League With Friends

Seven players per side are on court at once (six outfield plus a goalkeeper), with a workable squad of 10-12 to cover rotations and no-shows. A standard indoor sports hall, the same size used for 5-a-side football or basketball, works fine for handball, so booking is usually straightforward.

Because the ball is thrown and caught rather than kicked or hit with an implement, handball has a genuinely low skill barrier for new players compared to most sports on this list. Most groups can play a competitive game within the first session.

A round-robin across the season works the same way it does for football: every team plays every other team, decided on standard league points. Log the final score of each match as you go; handball games tend to produce plenty of goals, so expect livelier score differences than lower-scoring sports.

Handball's startup cost is low: a few match balls in the right size, two sets of bibs, and hall hire. Most sports halls already have goals suitable for five-a-side that work perfectly well for casual handball.

The one thing worth checking before you commit to a venue is resin. Many halls ban it because of the residue it leaves, and a league that planned around using it needs to know before the first session, not during it.

Newcomers travel constantly, because three steps and three seconds is far more restrictive than the basketball instincts most people arrive with. It is also the rule that makes handball feel like handball.

Spend twenty minutes of session one on steps, dribble and the six-metre line. Once those three are automatic the game flows, and until they are it stops every few seconds, which is nobody's idea of a good evening.

Handball is played in schools far more than it is played by adults, which leaves a large group of people who tried it once and never saw it offered again. Say the sport's name plainly in your recruitment and that group finds you.

It also converts well from five-a-side football and basketball, since the spatial sense transfers. A mixed session advertised as an introduction, rather than a league fixture, is the low-commitment way to turn curiosity into a squad.
