Clash Royale Rules

A mobile real-time strategy game — deploy cards to destroy the opponent's towers before they destroy yours.

Format

Best-of-1 or best-of-3 matches, 1v1, is standard for a casual league.

Scoring
  • Match win = 3 league points, loss = 0
  • Track towers destroyed as a supporting stat if a match ends on time rather than a full crown win
  • Tiebreaker: head-to-head result, then total match wins
Key Rules
  • Win by destroying the opponent's King Tower, or by destroying more towers than them when time runs out
  • Agree deck restrictions (card level caps) so a higher-level account doesn't have an unfair advantage
  • Agree the exact match length and overtime rule before the season

Card levels are the fairness problem

Clash Royale progression means an established player's cards are simply stronger than a newer player's, independent of skill. A league that ignores card levels is ranking account age as much as ability.

Tournament standard, which caps all cards at a fixed level, is the built-in solution and should be the default for any competitive league. It removes the progression advantage entirely and makes results about deck choice and play.

Deck rules and series format

Requiring players to submit two or three decks before a series, and to win with each, is the format that rewards breadth. Free deck choice each match lets a single strong deck carry a season.

Matches are short, typically three to five minutes, which means a best-of-five series takes about twenty minutes. A league can comfortably run a full round of fixtures in one evening.

Common questions

What is tournament standard?

A game mode that caps every card at the same level, so no player has a progression advantage. It is the standard for competitive play and the single most important setting for a fair league.

How long does a match take?

Three minutes plus overtime, so about five in practice. A best-of-five series runs around twenty minutes, which is the shortest fixture length of any esport on this list.

Should deck changes be allowed mid-series?

Submit decks in advance and require a win with each, which is the established competitive format. Free swapping between games rewards counter-picking rather than preparation.

How do balance changes affect a season?

Card balance updates arrive regularly and can retire a dominant deck overnight. Record which patch each fixture was played on, and consider scheduling seasons to sit between major updates where you can.

How many players make a good season?

Eight to sixteen. Matches are short enough that a full round of fixtures for sixteen players still fits in an evening, which makes it one of the easiest esports to run a large league in.
