Call of Duty Rules

A first-person shooter, played in objective modes (Search & Destroy, Hardpoint, Domination) or free-for-all.

Format

Best-of-3 or best-of-5 maps per match is standard for a casual competitive league.

Scoring
  • Match win = 3 league points, loss = 0 (mirrors this site's standard football-style points system)
  • Track individual map scores/rounds won as a supporting stat
  • Tiebreaker: head-to-head result, then map-differential across the season
Key Rules
  • Agree game mode(s), map pool, and lobby settings (custom vs. ranked) before the season
  • Agree on banned settings/exploits (e.g. specific glitches) up front — a written house-rules list avoids most disputes
  • Record or screen-capture matches where results might be disputed

Choosing a ruleset

Competitive Call of Duty runs on a published ruleset rather than default settings: a restricted map pool, a mode rotation of Hardpoint, Search and Destroy and Control, and a substantial list of banned weapons, attachments and equipment.

A casual league does not need the full professional restriction list, but it does need a written one. Left unrestricted, a season quickly becomes about who found the strongest launcher setup rather than who plays better.

Series format and scheduling

Best of five across the three modes is the standard series, and it takes about an hour. For a weekly league that means one or two series per team per night, which shapes how many teams your season can hold.

Set a rule for substitutes before the season. Squad games depend on having four available, and a league without a documented sub policy ends up either forfeiting fixtures or quietly allowing ringers.

Common questions

What modes should a league play?

Hardpoint, Search and Destroy and Control is the established competitive rotation, usually in that order across a best-of-five. Each rewards different skills, which is exactly why the series uses all three rather than repeating one.

How strict should weapon restrictions be?

Start with the current published competitive ban list for your title and relax it if your group finds it too limiting. Writing your own from scratch usually means discovering the same problems the official list already solved.

How do you handle a disconnect mid-match?

Agree in advance whether the map is replayed or the score stands. A common rule is that a disconnect in the first minute triggers a restart and anything later stands, which removes the incentive to disconnect when losing.

How long does a league night take?

About an hour per best-of-five series. Four teams playing a full round of fixtures therefore needs two to three hours, which is why most leagues run one series per team per night across a longer season.
