Dota 2 Rules
A 5v5 MOBA, similar in structure to League of Legends — destroy the enemy's Ancient to win.
Best-of-1 or best-of-3 matches is standard for a casual competitive league.
- •Match win = 3 league points, loss = 0
- •Track kills/deaths/assists and net worth as supporting stats if the league wants deeper tracking
- •Tiebreaker: head-to-head result, then total match wins across the season
- •Agree hero-ban/pick rules (Captain's Mode vs. All Pick) before the season
- •Win by destroying the enemy Ancient, or by the other team conceding
- •Agree on side selection/coin-flip procedure for fairness
Captains Mode and preparation
Captains Mode, with its long alternating ban and pick phase, is the competitive standard and takes several minutes before a game even starts. It rewards teams who have thought about hero pools and punishes those who have not.
That draft is also why a Dota league needs a designated captain per team. Draft decisions made by committee take far longer than the phase allows and produce compositions nobody is happy with.
Match length and scheduling
Dota games run longer than most comparable titles, commonly thirty-five to fifty minutes, and can go considerably longer. A best-of-three series can therefore occupy a full evening on its own.
For a weekly league, best-of-one in the group stage and best-of-three from the playoffs is the format that actually completes. Requiring best-of-three throughout is how a Dota season ends up abandoned in week five.
Common questions
How long is a Dota match?
Thirty-five to fifty minutes is typical, with the draft adding several more. Plan around an hour per game when scheduling a league night, and do not assume a best-of-three fits alongside anything else.
Which draft mode should a league use?
Captains Mode. It is the competitive standard and the ban phase is a real part of the contest. All Pick is fine for a casual social league but produces far less interesting series.
How many players should a roster carry?
Five plus at least one or two substitutes, with declared position preferences. Dota positions are highly specialised and a substitute who only plays position one cannot fill in for a position five.
How do patches affect a season?
Major patches can change the game fundamentally, not just tweak numbers. Record the patch for each fixture, and if a large update lands mid-season, expect the second half of your league to look like a different game.
Should a league allow coaching during drafts?
Decide it explicitly. The draft is where a coach adds most value, so allowing coaching there but not in-game is a common middle ground, and it needs stating rather than being assumed.
