FIFA / EA Sports FC Rules

A football simulation game, played 1v1 (or 2v2) online or on the same console.

Format

Head-to-head matches, typically 6-10 minute halves for a casual league rather than full-length.

Scoring
  • League table uses standard football points: 3 for a win, 1 for a draw, 0 for a loss
  • Tiebreaker: goal difference, then goals scored — same convention as the real-world Football rules on this site
  • Track individual match scorelines for a goals-for/against stat like a normal football league
Key Rules
  • Agree squad rules up front (real clubs only, no custom/Ultimate Team overpowered squads, same difficulty setting) — this is the single biggest source of disputes in casual FIFA leagues
  • Agree match length and any house rules (extra time on draws, pause rules) before kickoff
  • Screen-record or screenshot final scores for any disputed result

Settings decide the league

Half length is the setting that matters most: six minutes is the competitive standard and produces realistic scorelines, while four minutes favours whoever gets an early goal and ten turns every match into a rout. Lock it before the first fixture.

Team selection is the other decision. Restricting sides to a star-rating band, or drafting teams so no two players use the same club, stops a season being decided by who picked the strongest squad. Custom or classic squads should be off unless everyone has them.

Running the fixture list

A round-robin where everyone plays everyone home and away is the format most groups want, and with six-minute halves a fixture takes about fifteen minutes including menus. Eight players is therefore a full evening per round.

Online leagues need a rule for disconnects, which are frequent enough to matter. The usual convention is that a disconnect before a set minute is replayed, and after it the scoreline stands, which removes the incentive to pull the cable when losing.

Common questions

What half length should a league use?

Six minutes is the competitive standard and the right default. It gives roughly realistic scorelines and lets a fixture finish in about fifteen minutes, which is what makes a full round fit into one evening.

How do you stop everyone using the same team?

Either draft clubs at the start of the season so each is used by one player, or restrict selection to a star-rating band. Both work; the second is easier to administer and still leaves people a real choice.

How do you handle a new edition mid-season?

Finish the season on the version you started. Annual releases change gameplay enough that results before and after are not comparable, and mid-season migration also forces anyone who has not bought it out of the league.
