League of Legends Rules
A 5v5 MOBA where two teams push lanes and destroy the enemy base (the Nexus) to win.
Best-of-1 or best-of-3 matches, standard 5v5 Summoner's Rift, is the norm for a casual competitive league.
- •Match win = 3 league points, loss = 0
- •Track kills/deaths/assists and gold as supporting stats if the league wants deeper tracking
- •Tiebreaker: head-to-head result, then total match wins across the season
- •Agree champion-ban/pick rules (or none, for a purely casual league) before the season
- •Win by destroying the enemy Nexus, or by the other team surrendering (usually votable after 15-20 minutes)
- •Agree draft format (blind pick vs. draft pick) for fairness in a competitive league
Draft and match format
Tournament draft, with alternating bans and picks, is what separates a league from a set of ranked games. It rewards preparation, punishes one-trick players and produces genuinely different games from the same two teams.
A single game runs twenty-five to forty minutes, so a best-of-three series takes up to two hours. Most weekly leagues run best-of-one in the regular season and best-of-three in playoffs for exactly that reason.
Roster rules and patches
Five roles means five specific positions to fill, and a team missing a jungler cannot simply field a spare. Registering six or seven players with declared primary and secondary roles is the practical minimum for a season that completes.
Patches land every two weeks and can change which champions are viable. Note the patch each fixture is played on, and expect a mid-season shift; a league running six months is running across several distinct metas.
Common questions
How long is a league night?
A best-of-one takes about forty-five minutes including draft and setup, so two fixtures fit comfortably in an evening. Best-of-three needs a two-hour block per series.
Should the league use custom or tournament draft?
Tournament draft, available in custom games, is what you want. It gives the ban phase and side selection that make a competitive series meaningful rather than a ranked game with extra steps.
How do you balance skill across teams?
Draft teams by rank rather than letting them self-form, and seed by role rather than by overall rank alone. A team of five high-rank players who all play mid is worse than a balanced team of lower-ranked specialists.
What about smurf accounts?
Require players to compete on a declared main account and state the penalty in advance. In a league with drafted teams, an undeclared smurf undermines the seeding that the whole season depends on.
