Madden NFL Rules
An American football simulation game, played head-to-head online.
Head-to-head matches; casual leagues usually shorten quarters from the full length.
- •Standard American football league points: win = 2, loss = 0
- •Track points for/against per match for a full stat line
- •Tiebreaker: head-to-head result, then point differential
- •Agree teams, difficulty and any playbook restrictions (some leagues ban specific 'cheese' plays) up front
- •Agree quarter length before the season
- •Screenshot the final score for disputed results
Quarter length and accelerated clock
Madden's default settings produce either an unrealistically low number of plays or an extremely long game, depending on the version. Six to eight minute quarters with the accelerated clock enabled is the setting most leagues converge on.
The accelerated clock runs the play clock down automatically after each play, which brings the number of offensive snaps close to a real game without extending the fixture past forty minutes.
Franchise leagues versus head-to-head
An online franchise, where each player controls a team across a simulated season with drafts and trades, is the format most Madden groups actually want, and it is a considerably bigger commitment than a fixture list.
Franchise leagues need an active commissioner, agreed rules on trades to prevent lopsided deals, and a firm advance schedule so one inactive player does not stall the whole season. Set a deadline per week and simulate the games of anyone who misses it.
Common questions
What settings make Madden play realistically?
Six to eight minute quarters with the accelerated clock on, All-Pro or All-Madden difficulty, and injuries enabled. That combination gives a play count and score range close to the real sport without a fixture running an hour.
How do you stop unfair trades in a franchise league?
Require commissioner approval on every trade, or ban trades between human-controlled teams entirely and allow only trades with CPU teams. Trade abuse is the most common reason online franchise leagues collapse.
What happens when someone does not play their game?
Set a weekly advance deadline and simulate any unplayed fixture. It sounds harsh and it is the only thing that keeps a thirty-two-week franchise season moving at a predictable pace.
How many teams make a good franchise league?
Eight to sixteen human-controlled teams, with the remainder run by the CPU. Fewer than eight and the draft and trade market feels empty; more than sixteen and the weekly advance deadline becomes very hard to hold.
How do you keep a franchise season moving?
Set a fixed weekly advance time, simulate any fixture not played by then, and give the commissioner authority to do it without asking. A thirty-two-week season only completes if the schedule advances on a clock rather than on consensus.
