NBA 2K Rules
A basketball simulation game, played 1v1 or full 5v5 online.
Head-to-head matches; casual leagues usually shorten quarters (e.g. 5 minutes) from the full 12.
- •Standard basketball league points: win = 2, loss = 0 (or 1 point per win in a pure win/loss table)
- •Track points scored for/against per match, same as the real-world Basketball rules on this site
- •Tiebreaker: head-to-head result, then total point differential
- •Agree teams/rosters and difficulty setting in advance — using a maxed-out MyTeam squad against a stock roster is the usual complaint
- •Agree quarter length and game speed setting before the season
- •Screenshot the final box score for any disputed result
Quarter length and difficulty
Five or six-minute quarters is the usual league setting, producing scores in a realistic range and a game that runs about twenty-five minutes. Twelve-minute quarters are for simulation fans with an evening free, not for a league night.
Difficulty should be locked for the season, and All-Star or Superstar is where most competitive groups settle. Leaving it on default means results depend on whichever setting the host happened to have selected.
Team parity and formats
Head-to-head with real NBA teams needs a rule preventing everyone from taking the same two superteams. Drafting teams at the start of the season, or randomising them per fixture, both work and produce more varied basketball.
MyTeam and other card modes are a different league entirely, because roster strength depends on spending and grinding. If you run one, cap the team overall rating or restrict to a specific card tier.
Common questions
What quarter length should a league use?
Five or six minutes. That produces games in the eighty to hundred point range, which feels like basketball, and keeps a fixture to about twenty-five minutes so a full round fits into an evening.
How do you handle team selection?
A draft at the start of the season is the most popular approach: each player picks a team, no duplicates, and keeps it all year. It creates identity across a season and stops every fixture being the same two rosters.
Should sliders be adjusted?
Only if everyone agrees and they are documented. Custom sliders can improve realism considerably, but an undocumented slider set means results are not reproducible and new players joining mid-season are at a disadvantage.
Should fatigue and injuries be enabled?
Fatigue yes, injuries usually not. Fatigue rewards rotation and makes the game more tactical, while injuries in a league where you keep one team all season can remove a player's best asset through pure chance.
