EA Sports PGA Tour Rules

A golf simulation game, played solo or head-to-head over 9 or 18 holes.

Format

Stroke play (fewest total shots) is the standard league format, same as real golf.

Scoring
  • Lowest total strokes across the round wins, same as the real-world Golf rules on this site
  • League table can rank by average score per round across the season
  • Tiebreaker: best single-round score, then a sudden-death playoff hole
Key Rules
  • Agree course, difficulty, and wind/weather settings before each round so conditions are identical for everyone
  • Agree whether mulligans (re-takes) are allowed — most competitive leagues ban them
  • Screenshot the final scorecard for any disputed round

Formats that work for a league

Stroke play across eighteen holes is the natural format and takes a while, so most leagues run nine-hole rounds or use the game's own quick-round options. A season of eight or ten rounds on different courses produces a proper order of merit.

Match play is the faster alternative and pairs well with a knockout bracket. It also removes the problem of one disastrous hole ending someone's round, which in stroke play can put a player out of contention on the third tee.

Settings and course rotation

Lock difficulty, wind and green speed for the season, and note them in the league rules. Wind in particular varies enormously in its effect and a round played in calm conditions is not comparable to one played in a gale.

Rotate courses through the season rather than replaying a favourite. A league on one course rewards memorisation over golf, and the variety is most of what makes a season interesting.

Common questions

How long does a round take?

Eighteen holes runs about forty-five minutes to an hour per player depending on settings. Nine-hole rounds halve that and are what most weekly leagues use, with a full eighteen saved for a season finale.

Should players use the same swing settings?

Assist levels change the difficulty substantially, so a league should specify one. Three-click and analogue swing mechanics are very different skills, and mixing them makes scores incomparable.

How do you handle mixed ability?

Run a handicap based on scoring average across previous rounds, exactly as a real golf society would. It is easy to compute from the results you are already recording and keeps newer players competitive from week one.

How do you handle a player who cannot finish a round?

Score an unfinished round as a did-not-finish rather than estimating a total, and drop each player's worst result or two across the season. That way one interrupted evening does not decide the order of merit.
