Rainbow Six Siege Rules

A tactical 5v5 shooter built around destructible environments and defender/attacker roles.

Format

Best-of-3 or best-of-5 rounds-based matches (first to a set number of rounds, alternating attack/defence).

Scoring
  • Match win = 3 league points, loss = 0
  • Track round differential as a supporting stat
  • Tiebreaker: head-to-head result, then round differential across the season
Key Rules
  • Agree the map pool and operator ban/pick rules before the season
  • Win a round by eliminating the other team, completing the objective, or defusing/planting the device
  • Agree on any banned operators or strategies (e.g. specific exploit spots) as a house rule

The competitive format

Rainbow Six Siege's standard competitive match is first to seven rounds with a side switch at six, with teams alternating attack and defence. A match takes about forty minutes, which makes one fixture per team per night realistic.

The map and operator ban phase is part of the competition, not an accessory to it: each team bans maps, then operators, before play begins. Publish the exact ban order in your league rules, since it materially affects preparation.

Rosters and communication

Five-a-side with registered substitutes is essential, since Siege punishes an unfamiliar stand-in more than most team shooters. Teams should register at least six players and declare substitutions before a fixture rather than during it.

Agree a rule on coaching and outside communication during a match. Siege rounds are short and information-dense, and a coach relaying information from a spectator view is a genuine advantage that needs an explicit policy.

Common questions

How many rounds is a match?

First to seven with a side switch at six is the standard, with overtime played in pairs of rounds if it reaches 6-6. A full match runs around forty minutes.

How does the ban phase work?

Teams alternate banning maps until one remains, then each bans attacking and defending operators. The bans are strategic in themselves, and a league should fix the order and number so both teams prepare against the same process.

Should a league use custom servers?

Yes. Custom matches allow the correct competitive settings, the ban phase and match recording, none of which ranked matchmaking provides. It is the difference between a league and a set of ranked games.

How do you handle operator balance patches?

Note the patch version at the start of each season and expect the meta to shift. If a patch lands mid-season, the practical choice is to carry on and record the change rather than restart, but say which you are doing.
