Rocket League Rules
Football, but with rocket-powered cars — score more goals than the opponent to win.
Best-of-3 or best-of-5 matches, standard 3v3 (or 2v2), is typical for a casual competitive league.
- •Match win = 3 league points, loss = 0
- •Track goals for/against per match, same convention as the real-world Football rules on this site
- •Tiebreaker: head-to-head result, then goal differential across the season
- •Most goals when regulation time (5 minutes) ends wins; a tie goes to sudden-death overtime
- •Agree team size (2v2, 3v3) and arena/mutator settings before the season
- •Record or screenshot results where they might be disputed
Choosing a team size
3v3 is the standard competitive format and produces the most tactical games, with clear rotation and positional roles. 2v2 is more chaotic and more individually revealing, and 1v1 is a genuinely different game about pure mechanics.
Pick one per league. Rankings across different team sizes are not comparable, and a player who excels in duos may be a liability in a threes rotation, which is a legitimate observation rather than a scoring problem to solve.
Series format and scheduling
Matches are five minutes plus overtime, which makes Rocket League exceptionally easy to schedule: a best-of-five series takes about thirty minutes including setup, so a full round of fixtures fits comfortably in an evening.
That short match length also means a league can afford best-of-seven for playoffs without the night overrunning, which gives finals a different feel from the regular season.
Common questions
How long is a match?
Five minutes of game time, plus golden goal overtime if the score is level. Real elapsed time including goal replays and kickoffs is closer to seven or eight minutes per game.
How do you balance ranks?
Use in-game rank to seed a draft rather than letting teams self-form. Rocket League ranks are unusually reliable as a skill measure, which makes drafting straightforward compared with most team games.
Should there be a rank cap?
Divisions work better than caps. Splitting a league into two or three tiers with promotion between seasons keeps every fixture competitive without excluding anyone from playing.
What stats are worth tracking?
Goals, assists, saves and shots are recorded in game and give a fuller picture than the scoreline. Saves in particular identify the players holding a team together, which pure goal counts always miss.
How do you handle a missing player?
Register at least one substitute per team and allow a match to be played with a stand-in rather than forfeited. In 3v3, playing two against three is not a contest, so a workable sub policy matters more than in most formats.
