Scrabble Rules
Players place letter tiles on a board to build words and score points based on letter value and board bonuses.
2-4 players per board; a league usually runs round-robin matches, one board game per fixture.
- •Each word scores the sum of its tile values, doubled/tripled by any premium squares it covers
- •Highest total score at the end of the game wins that match
- •League table: win/loss record, with total points scored as a tiebreaker
- •Words must appear in an agreed dictionary (e.g. Collins Scrabble Words or the Official Scrabble Players Dictionary) — agree which one before the season starts
- •A challenged word that isn't valid costs the challenged player their turn
- •The game ends when all tiles are used and one player empties their rack, or when no more legal plays remain
Word lists and challenges
Almost every Scrabble dispute traces back to which dictionary is in play. Collins is the standard outside North America and accepts far more short words than the American TWL list, and a league that has not chosen one will re-run the same argument every week.
Agree the challenge rule too. The common casual version is a free challenge, where an invalid word is simply removed with no further penalty; tournament play penalises the challenger if the word turns out to be valid, which makes challenging a real decision.
Making a league fair across boards
Raw score is a poor league measure because it depends heavily on your opponent: a high-scoring game against a strong player is worth more than a runaway win against a beginner. Most leagues rank on wins first and use cumulative point spread as the tiebreak.
Spread also needs a cap in casual play, otherwise there is an incentive to grind out a huge margin against a weaker opponent rather than finish the game. Capping the spread counted per game at 100 or 150 points removes that entirely.
Common questions
How many points is a bingo worth?
Using all seven tiles in one turn scores a 50-point bonus on top of the word's value, which is usually the single biggest swing in a game. Tracking bingos per player across a season is a satisfying stat that says more about skill than final scores do.
Which dictionary should a league use?
Collins Scrabble Words is the international standard and what most UK clubs use. Whichever you pick, have a copy or an agreed app at the table, because a challenge resolved from memory is not resolved.
How long does a game take?
Around forty-five minutes to an hour untimed. Adding chess clocks at 25 minutes each is how tournaments keep it predictable, and is worth doing if your league needs to fit three rounds into an evening.
