UFC / EA Sports MMA Rules

An MMA fighting simulation, played head-to-head in single bouts.

Format

Head-to-head matches, standard 3-round format for a casual league (5 rounds for a 'title fight').

Scoring
  • Win = 2 league points, loss = 0
  • Track finishes (KO/TKO/submission) separately from decision wins as a bonus stat, mirroring real MMA scorecards
  • Tiebreaker: head-to-head result, then total finishes
Key Rules
  • Agree fighter/weight-class restrictions and difficulty setting before the season
  • A fight ends by knockout, submission, doctor stoppage, or judges' decision after the final round
  • Agree round length in advance — most casual leagues shorten from the default

Weight classes and fighter selection

The quickest way to a stale league is everyone picking the same top-rated fighter. Drafting fighters at the start of the season, with no duplicates, or restricting each fixture to a nominated weight class, produces far more varied fights.

A weight-class rotation across the season is the neatest version: each round is contested in a different division, so players have to be competent with several fighters rather than mastering one.

Difficulty and round settings

Lock difficulty and round length for the season. Three five-minute rounds is the standard non-title fight and produces realistic decisions; shortening rounds pushes fights towards early finishes and rewards aggression disproportionately.

Decide too whether created fighters are permitted. Career-mode creations can be built well beyond the balance of the roster fighters, which makes them a separate league rather than an option within one.

Common questions

How long is a fight?

Three five-minute rounds for a standard bout, five for a title fight, so about fifteen to twenty minutes of real time including walkouts and replays. A full round of fixtures for eight players fills an evening.

Should created fighters be allowed?

Usually not in a league using roster fighters, since created attributes can exceed the balance of real ones. If your league is built entirely on created fighters, cap the attribute points instead.

How do you stop everyone picking the same fighter?

Draft fighters at the start of the season with no duplicates, or rotate the weight class each round. Both force variety and stop the season being decided by who claimed the strongest rating first.

How should a league score fights?

Points for a win with a bonus for a finish is common, since it rewards going for a stoppage rather than coasting to a decision. Recording method of victory also gives a season some texture beyond the table.

Should submissions and stamina be adjusted?

Leave stamina on the default competitive setting and lock it for the season. Adjusting it changes the entire pacing of a fight, and a league where two players ran different settings has produced two different games.
