Valorant Rules
A tactical 5v5 shooter combining gunplay with character abilities.
Best-of-1 or best-of-3 matches (first to 13 rounds per map) is standard for a casual league.
- •Match win = 3 league points, loss = 0
- •Track round differential per map as a supporting stat, similar to goal difference in football
- •Tiebreaker: head-to-head result, then round differential across the season
- •Agree the map pool and whether agent picks are locked or free-for-all before the season
- •Standard win condition: eliminate the other team, plant/defuse the Spike, or win by round time-out
- •Custom lobby with a neutral server region keeps ping fair between both teams
Match format and map pool
A standard competitive game is first to 13 rounds with a side switch at 12, and takes thirty-five to fifty minutes. That length means one best-of-one per team per night is a realistic weekly league, with best-of-three reserved for playoffs.
Fix the map pool at the start of the season and use a ban-pick process for each fixture: teams alternate banning maps until one remains. It gives both sides agency and stops a season being decided by one team's map specialism.
Rosters and agent rules
Five-a-side means a league needs registered rosters with a defined substitute policy, otherwise fixtures collapse whenever someone is unavailable. Registering six or seven per team is the practical minimum.
Agent restrictions are rarely necessary at casual level, since the game already limits each agent to one per team. What does need stating is whether a team can change agents between rounds, which they cannot in a standard match.
Common questions
How long is a match?
Thirty-five to fifty minutes for a first-to-13 game, longer if it goes to overtime. Plan a league night around one match per team, with a best-of-three only for finals.
How does overtime work?
At 12-12 the game goes to overtime, played in pairs of rounds with sides switching, and a team must win by two. Some casual leagues instead accept a draw at 12-12 to keep the schedule predictable, which is a reasonable adaptation.
How do you handle mixed skill ranks?
Draft teams rather than letting them self-form, using in-game rank as the seeding input. Self-formed teams cluster the strongest players together and produce a season decided in week one.
What about smurfing?
Require players to compete on their main account and state the penalty for not doing so. In a small league it is easy to spot, and being explicit up front is what stops it happening rather than what punishes it afterwards.
